It doesn’t just happen to women

Matt Ridley’s Wall Street Journal article; Is That Scientific Heretic a Genius—or a Loon?discusses the trials and tribulations that some heroes of science (originally considered heretics) suffer at the hands of their colleagues for putting forth a new idea – a solution to an often longstanding problem (think Simmelweiss). Well, it can happen to any scientist, and just this past year that Daniel Shechtman won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of ‘quasicrystals’ and in so doing transformed from a heretic into a hero.
